LAT Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal

Everyone has read his books, especially Kampung Boy’

'Sweet, funny, and brilliantly drawn, Kampung Boy is one of the all-time great cartoon books'
- Matt Groening (The Simpsons)

Last Sunday, my friends and I went to Istana Budaya to watch Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal. It was my second time watching theater after "Teater Natrah" early this year. I've fallen in love with musical theater and I am SO excited to watch it again. The show started at 3pm and we were there at Istana Budaya at 2.30 pm. It's kinda early so while waiting for the show started, we had a drinks at the cafe there.

Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal is the first local musical featuring animation. Harith Iskander and Hans Isaac had done a fantastic job writing and directing Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal.  Leading the cast are talented singer/actors including Awie (Lat), Daniel Shazique Eezkandar Azraien (Lat as a little boy) Atilia (Lat’s wife Faezah), Sandra Sodhy (Mrs Hew), Douglas Lim (Frankie), Pushpa Narayan (Ms Thambi), and Omar Abdullah (Pak Samad).

Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal is based on Lat’s famed work The Kampung Boy which narrates the tales of his life, beginning from his childhood in a small village in Kota Baru, Perak right up to the peak of his career as a cartoonist as well as his ups and downs.

At school, his classmates poke fun at his drawings, calling them a waste of time, but Lat junior has a dream and he isn’t afraid to chase it.

Recognise that hair? That’s teacher Mrs Hew (Sandra Sodhy), as immortalised in the graphic novels.
“DWYL, LWYD.. (Do What You Love and Love What You Do)"

Lat goes to Ipoh to attend an English school where he makes a good friend, Frankie..

A large portion of the tale focuses on his growing up years and school life when he meets Mrs Hew, a teacher who drills the importance of knowledge and learning. He also befriends Frankie, a Chinese boy who shares his loves for music. (So cheap.. so cheap.. Funny lol.. hehe..)

Working as a crime reporter is not what he loved to do.

Faezah, or Fae' only to fall for Lat after realizing he was from the same 'kampung' as she was..

Frankie, turned into a London Boy from a Pekan Boy..

London Boy!

This musical is an extension of Lat's efforts through his graphic novels in terms of fostering unity among Malaysians. He hopes it will create awareness in the importance of harmony among various races. Graphic novel The Kampung Boy has been translated into 15 major languages including Arabic, German, Spanish and Japanese and is sold in more than 10 countries.

We really enjoyed the show from beginning till the end. Everything was SO perfect. The cast, the script, the music and the song were excellent.  Yang paling best bila dengar Awie bercakap dalam loghat Perak. Cute!

Check out some of our pics right after we done watching the show yesterday. We managed to take pics with a few of Lat Kampung Boy Sebuah Muzikal artist.
